What Is Threshing Day in Fourth Wing?
Threshing Day is the dragon-bonding trial of the Rider’s Quadrant at Basgiath War College in Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing. Once a year, the first-year rider candidates cross into the Threshing Valley, where hundreds of dragons decide which cadets are worthy of a bond. The rule every candidate learns first: you don’t pick the dragon — the dragon picks you. There are more cadets than dragons, and a wrong approach — meeting the wrong eyes, flinching, retreating — can get you killed by sundown. Survivors graduate from candidates to riders.

The name now refers to three things at once, and this page covers all of them:
- The ritual — the in-world trial at Basgiath (this page).
- The book — Threshing Day, a 13-story Empyrean collection released September 29, 2026 (below).
- The game — Dragonkind, the free browser game at dragonkind.com that lets you attempt the Threshing yourself (below).
The Threshing Rules in the Books
The clearest statement of the rules appears in Fourth Wing, in the chapter epigraphs quoting the in-world Colonel Kaori’s Field Guide to Dragonkind:
The air is ripe with possibilities, and possibly the stench of sulfur from a dragon who has been offended. Never look a red in the eye. Never back down from a green. If you show trepidation to a brown… well, just don’t.
Unpacked per dragon color:
| Dragon | Rule from the books | What it means in the valley |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Never look a red in the eye | Eye contact is a challenge — a red will take it as one |
| Green | Never back down from a green | Lower your eyes in supplication, wait for acceptance, but never retreat |
| Brown | Show no trepidation | Browns respect composure; visible fear invites the flame |
| Blue, orange, black | No epigraph rule | Blues never forgive weakness, oranges are unpredictable, and blacks choose almost no one |
As for the question “what day is Threshing Day?” — the books treat it as an annual event in the Basgiath academic year rather than pinning it to a calendar date; each class faces its Threshing when the first-year candidates are sent into the valley. In the real world, the date that matters is September 29, 2026 — the day the Threshing Day book and the Dragonkind game both launched.
Threshing Day the Book vs the Event
Threshing Day (the Wing and Claw Collection, Empyrean #3.5) retells one legendary Threshing Day from thirteen points of view across thirteen short stories — Xaden, Brennan, Dain, Sawyer, Sloane, Imogen, Ridoc, Aaric, Mira, Liam, Bodhi, Rhiannon, and Garrick. Notably, there is no Violet story: her own Threshing was already written in Fourth Wing, and there are no dragon POV chapters either.
Two facts that matter for your reading order:
- It is not Book 4. Yarros has said so directly — it is a companion collection, and Book 4 is being written separately.
- You don’t have to read it before Book 4. It deepens the day and the riders you already know, but it is not a required stepping stone.
The full placement — after Onyx Storm, before Book 4 — is laid out in the Empyrean reading order, and every edition (deluxe illustrated, sprayed edges, ebook, audio) is covered on the book hub.
Threshing Day the Game
The same day the book launched, the official game went live: Dragonkind, a free browser experience at dragonkind.com that puts you through the trial itself — email verification, the Rider’s Quadrant, the valley, the choices, and a bond or a burn. Over half a million readers entered the valley in the first week. If you would rather rehearse risk-free first, the Threshing Day dragon quiz tells you which den would take an interest in you — no email required.
