What Is Colonel Kaori’s Field Guide to Dragonkind?
It is a fictional textbook inside the Empyrean world. The novels open chapters with short epigraphs, and several of them are credited to Colonel Kaori’s Field Guide to Dragonkind: practical, slightly dry advice about how dragons behave and how cadets should act around them. The Official Empyrean Series Fan Club collects four Fourth Wing excerpts under that title, and the official Empyrean series site reproduces the chapter 3 passage about blue dragons under the heading Colonel Kaori.
We found no standalone edition of the Field Guide from the publisher or on retailer listings, so if you saw it for sale, check the seller carefully. Not finding one is not proof that none will ever exist.
What Does the Field Guide Say About Each Dragon Color?
The epigraphs cover red, green, brown, and blue. The official series site’s Dens & Colors page fills in the rest, and it matches the epigraphs where they overlap:
| Color | The Fourth Wing epigraphs | The official series site |
|---|---|---|
| Red | “Never look a red in the eye.” | Never meet their gaze; scorpiontails are especially quick to anger, and approach from the left and front if possible |
| Green | “Never back down from a green.” | Show submission by lowering your eyes and awaiting their approval; never back down |
| Brown | “If you show trepidation to a brown…well, just don’t.” | Never show fear |
| Blue | Chapter 3 calls blues “the most ruthless” | Kaori warns against approaching any blue and advises cadets to flee |
| Orange | None we found | The most unpredictable of dragonkind, a risk to approach during Threshing |
| Black | None we found | No approach rule listed; the site says outsmarting a black dragon is impossible |
The gaps matter: the Field Guide quotes in Fourth Wing say nothing about orange or black dragons, so any advice about those two colors comes from the official site or from players, not from the guide itself.
Which Field Guide Quotes Are Worth Knowing?
Chapter numbers differ slightly between fan compilations, so check your own copy. These are Fourth Wing passages, quoted as they are transcribed by the compilations we checked:
- Chapter 3: blues descend from the Gormfaileas line and are “the most ruthless”, especially the rare Blue Daggertail.
- Chapter 12: “Never look a red in the eye. Never back down from a green. If you show trepidation to a brown…well, just don’t.”
- Chapter 13: “There is nothing quite as humbling, or as awe-inspiring, as witnessing Threshing…for those who live through it anyway.”
- Chapter 16: the guide’s narrator admits “there is a great deal we don’t know about the way dragons govern themselves.”
The tone is the point. The guide reads like confident field notes from someone who is not always right about creatures that never explain themselves, which is how Threshing feels from the cadet’s side.
Does the Field Guide Help in the Dragonkind Game?
Possibly, but nobody has confirmed it. The official rules and the choices players report in the game point the same way: lower your eyes, do not waver, and do not stare down a red. Reports of the two-green-dragons clearing, for example, say that indecision burns, which echoes “never back down from a green.” No source documents how the game turns these rules into the options on screen, and the official FAQ publishes no answer key. How to survive Threshing Day separates the canon rules from the player-reported ones, and the two green dragons guide covers the clearest example.
If you are reading the novels, the Field Guide is a good reason to read the epigraphs rather than skip them. Our spoiler guide explains the safest order, and the Threshing Day explainer covers the ritual itself.
