What Is the Dragonkind Game?

Dragonkind is the official Threshing Day game — a free, browser-based choose-your-path experience at dragonkind.com that drops you into the dragon-bonding trial from Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean series. There is no app to install, no account password, and nothing to pay: you sign in with an email address and a one-time verification code, then the game asks you one question — dare to enter the Rider’s Quadrant? The Dragonkind game sign-in screen at dragonkind.com welcoming cadets with an email code login before entering the Threshing

The site’s footer credits the story to Rebecca Yarros, the website to design studio Infantree, dragon art to Arancia Studio, and background art to Andreas Rocha. It is operated by Yarros Ink, Inc. The game launched on September 29, 2026, the same day the Threshing Day book went on sale — and by October 2, Yarros announced that “half a million of you have already entered the Threshing Valley.”

Here is a real first run, start to finish, so you can see what the experience looks like before you commit your email:

How a Run Works

A full run is short — minutes, not hours — and follows the same arc as the Threshing in the books: The YOUR ASSIGNMENT story screen in a Dragonkind run, shown after logging in and before entering the Threshing Valley The WELCOME TO THRESHING transition where your candidate first enters the Dragonkind Threshing Valley

  1. Verify your email. Enter an address, receive a one-time code, and you are in. No password, no profile, no payment.
  2. Enter the Rider’s Quadrant. You are enrolled as a candidate, the same as a first-year cadet at Basgiath War College.
  3. Cross into the Threshing Valley. This is where the trial begins.
  4. Make choices, scene by scene. The game presents situations — how to approach a dragon, how to handle other candidates — and your choices shape which dragon takes notice of you. For what the community has learned about specific routes, see our Threshing answers page.
  5. Bond or burn. A dragon either chooses you (you bond) or you fail the approach (you burn).
  6. Get your result card. A successful bond produces a shareable result card naming your dragon — the moment the game is built around, and a faithful one: in canon, the dragon does the choosing. How that works is covered in dragon bonding explained.

Every Dragon You Can Bond

The community consensus — compiled in the Reddit bonding megathreads — is that the game pools six dragon colors with five tail types each, for 30 possible dragons. The five tails (Morningstar, Dagger, Sword, Club, and Scorpion) match the tail families in the books, and every color is reported to come in all five. That figure is player-compiled, not officially published, but it lines up with the books’ dragon system.

Color How to approach it (per the books) Famous bonded dragons Full guide
Red Never look a red in the eye Deigh (Liam), Sliseag (Sawyer), Aotrom (Ridoc) Red dragon guide
Green Never back down — lower your eyes, hold your ground Feirge (Rhiannon), Teine (Mira) Green dragon guide
Blue No written rule — never show weakness Sgaeyl (Xaden) Blue dragon guide
Brown Show no trepidation Aimsir (General Lilith Sorrengail) Brown dragon guide
Orange No written rule — the least predictable den Marbh (Brennan), Baide (Jack Barlowe), Glane (Imogen) Orange dragon guide
Black The rarest — they choose almost no one Tairn (Violet), Codagh (General Melgren) Black dragon guide

Not sure which color you would even want? The Threshing Day dragon quiz maps your temperament to a den before you spend a run on it.

What Happens If You Burn?

Burning is the failure ending: your approach offends the dragon, and your candidate’s run ends in fire. It is a real outcome, not a rumor — players have posted their burn results, and one Reddit player described getting “roasted” on a red dragon route. The burn ending screen in the Dragonkind game after a failed dragon approach, reading That was a… choice The Dragonkind cooldown message telling the player to come back in a few hours after burning in the Threshing

Two honest caveats about retrying:

  • The cooldown is player-reported, not official. Community reports consistently describe a wait of roughly four hours before you can enter the valley again, but the developers have not published an exact number.
  • Some candidates never bond. Rebecca Yarros herself said, in an Instagram reel about the game, that about 1 in 10 players won’t bond no matter what they choose. If your first run ends in fire, that is the trial working as designed.

Dragonkind vs the Book

The game and the Threshing Day book are two views of the same event. The book — a 13-story collection released September 29, 2026 — retells the day of the Threshing from thirteen riders’ points of view, with no Violet chapter (her own Threshing already happened in Fourth Wing). The game puts you in the valley making the choices. Play one, read the other, in either order — the book hub covers editions and where to buy, and what Threshing Day actually is explains the ritual itself.
