Does Threshing Day Have Spoilers? Who Should Wait
Publishers say Threshing Day contains spoilers and is best read after Onyx Storm. Who should wait, what the thirteen stories cover, and how to stay spoiler-safe.
FAQ
Does Threshing Day spoil Onyx Storm?
Can you read Threshing Day without reading the series?
Is Threshing Day a continuation of Violet and Xaden's story?
Does Threshing Day have content warnings?
Does Threshing Day Have Spoilers?
Yes. Publisher copy for Threshing Day says that the series is best read in order, and that although the book “can be enjoyed as an introduction to the series,” it is “best read after Onyx Storm” because of contained spoilers. The same advice appears in product copy from Hachette UK, Indigo, Audible, GraphicAudio, and the German publisher dtv, so it is not one retailer’s wording.
What the publishers do not say is which details are spoiled. We therefore treat the whole collection as spoiler territory for anyone who has not finished Onyx Storm, and this wiki’s reading order guide follows the same rule.
Who Should Wait Before Reading Threshing Day?
| Where you are in the series | What to do |
|---|---|
| You have not read Fourth Wing | Wait. Start with Fourth Wing; the collection assumes you know what a Threshing day means. |
| You finished Fourth Wing or Iron Flame | Wait until you have read Onyx Storm, as the publishers recommend. |
| You finished Onyx Storm | Read it now. This is the point the publishers recommend. |
| You only play the Dragonkind game | The game is a separate experience. Our game guides stick to canon rules and do not retell the book’s stories. |
If you are unsure, the Threshing Day reading order lays out the full series sequence.
What Is Threshing Day About, Without Spoilers?
The publisher describes Threshing Day as the brutal, high-stakes trial at Basgiath War College where would-be riders fight to earn the bond of a dragon or die trying. It follows thirteen cadets through one day, and the official tagline is “Thirteen unforgettable stories. One legendary day.” The collection’s own rule is short: “don’t die.”
The publisher lists the thirteen viewpoint characters with a one-line description for each:
| Cadet | Publisher’s description |
|---|---|
| Xaden Riorson | The powerful leader |
| Rhiannon Matthias | The clever friend |
| Dain Aetos | The dutiful rule-follower |
| Liam Mairi | The kindhearted protector |
| Ridoc Gamlyn | The jokester |
| Sawyer Henrick | The underdog |
| Garrick Tavis | The dependable aide |
| Imogen Cardulo | The impulsive fighter |
| Bodhi Durran | The second-in-command |
| Mira Sorrengail | The fearless rider |
| Brennan Sorrengail | The brilliant tactician |
| Aaric Graycastle | The restless royal |
| Sloane Mairi | The determined sister |
Two points that help set expectations. There is no Violet viewpoint in the list, because her own Threshing was already written in Fourth Wing. And every listed viewpoint character is a human cadet; fan coverage of the collection confirms there are no dragon viewpoints, though dragons appear throughout the stories. Our dragon guides cover each den from the official series material.
Do You Need Threshing Day Before Book 4?
The official Threshing Day site calls the book a companion collection, not the continuation of Violet and Xaden’s story after Onyx Storm, and Yarros described it as “my next book (not book four!)”. Our Book 4 guide tracks what is and is not announced for the next novel.
Content Notes
Rebecca Yarros’s site lists content warnings for the Empyrean series, including war, battle, hand-to-hand combat, blood, intense violence, brutal injuries, death, poisoning, graphic language, and sexual activity shown on the page. GraphicAudio rates its dramatized adaptation for ages 18 and up. The free Xaden story on the author’s website also contains strong language.
How to Stay Spoiler-Safe While You Read
- Read the publisher’s description, not recaps. Search results for a character name plus “Threshing Day” often surface plot summaries.
- Avoid review titles that name characters. Reviews that open with a character’s name are the most likely to reveal outcomes.
- Use this wiki for the game, not the plot. Our Threshing Day explainer covers the event itself, and the editions guide helps you pick which version to buy.
