What Happens If You Burn in Dragonkind

Burn endings in Dragonkind look like this in real runs: the on-screen insult, the cooldown text, the Rotunda timer, and how a retry starts after you wait.

FAQ

What happens when you burn in Dragonkind?
Your run ends with a failure screen in the Threshing Valley — wording changes by encounter — then a cooldown message about coming back in a few hours. You are not locked out forever; the official FAQ says you can retry until you bond.
How long is the Dragonkind cooldown after a burn?
The official FAQ says only a few hours. Parade and many player reports say about four hours, and TabbyLoves recorded the Rotunda screen reading YOU CAN BRAVE THRESHING AGAIN IN 4:00 after an orange-dragon burn.
Can you retry Dragonkind after burning?
Yes. When the timer clears, dragonkind.com/rotunda shows Welcome Back, Cadet and a Brave Threshing button. TabbyLoves clicked it after the cooldown and saw a fresh YOUR ASSIGNMENT, CADET screen with Wing, Section, and Squad fields again.
Do all burn endings use the same text?
No. Creators have filmed different insults for different mistakes — orange eye contact, two-green indecision, and a generic fire blast line, among others. The cooldown copy is similar but not identical between runs.
Is there a way to guarantee you never burn?
No verified answer key exists. Rebecca Yarros has said there is roughly a 10% chance of incineration per run no matter what you choose, as Parade reported. Use canon approach rules as experiments, not promises — see our survival checklist and reported routes pages.
What can you do while waiting for the cooldown?
The in-game message points you to the Guide to Dragonkind on Rebecca Yarros's site. While the Rotunda timer ran, TabbyLoves also opened the Bonus Material link from the valley footer (it opens Rebecca Yarros's site in a new tab).

What Happens If You Burn in Dragonkind?

A burn ends your Threshing run in fire: the dragon rejects you, the story stops, and the game moves you into a cooldown before you can enter the valley again. It is the same failure state described on our Dragonkind game overview — not a glitch, and not a permanent ban. The official FAQ says you can try again after a few hours and keep going until you bond.

This page transcribes what creators filmed on screen in October 2026 runs. Wording below matches those recordings; treat timing numbers as reported, except where the UI shows a literal countdown.

What Do Burn Endings Look Like?

The game does not reuse one generic Game Over card. Insults change with the dragon and the mistake. Three variants show up clearly in the footage we checked:

Orange dragon: standing your ground and meeting its eyes

In TabbyLoves’s run, the orange encounter offered STAND YOUR GROUND AND LOOK THE DRAGON IN THE EYE among other responses. Her auto-captions read that line at 14:28, and the next card is the burn below — different body text from the red-route screenshots on Threshing answers and how to survive.

The failure card opens with “OOOOH.” and “That was a… choice.”, then adds that the dragon found her decisions foolish and “you have been incinerated.”

Two green dragons: indecision and a fire blast

Smashical’s recording reaches the two green dragons clearing — two greens watching, one narrowing its eyes, one growling — then the Which do you choose to engage? menu with three lowered-eyes options.

In this run she selected “LOWER YOUR EYES BUT KEEP YOUR BODY NEUTRAL, LETTING THEM DECIDE” — the third button is highlighted and NEXT SCENE → is active at 20:18, and the following cards quote indecision and Malek (below). This is the same neutral option the two green dragons guide lists as reportedly burning.

The run then flashes an intermediate line — “ROASTS YOU, WITH A SINGLE SHOT OF FIRE.” — before the longer rebuke:

Smashical’s run then shows valley cooldown copy (“Gather your common sense, read up on the guide to dragon kind, and come back in a few hours” at about 20:58) that differs slightly from Tabby’s valley screen below.

What Does the Cooldown Message Say?

After you tap through the insult, the valley UI switches to mentor-style instructions. TabbyLoves’s orange burn showed:

“Brush off the burn, read up on the Guide to Dragonkind, and come back in a few hours. Your dragon still waits for you in the Threshing Valley.”

Two layers matter here:

  • Official: Rebecca Yarros’s FAQ says only “a few hours” before you can try again, with no cap on attempts.
  • Reported: Parade’s launch piece and many community posts say about four hours, matching the on-screen Rotunda timer Tabby filmed below — player-reported rhythm, not an official schedule.

What Do You See on the Rotunda While You Wait?

Leaving the valley sends you to dragonkind.com/rotunda. When the cooldown is active, the hall shows “WELCOME BACK, CADET” and a live countdown. TabbyLoves’s recording after the orange burn read:

“YOU CAN BRAVE THRESHING AGAIN IN 4:00”

While the timer ran, she opened Bonus Material from the valley footer, and Rebecca Yarros’s site appeared in another tab at roughly 15:16–15:28. That is one way to pass the wait; the FAQ does not require it.

What Does a Retry Look Like?

When the countdown finishes, the Rotunda swaps the timer for a gold “BRAVE THRESHING” button. TabbyLoves’s recording shows the button ready at 34:35; about a minute later the YOUR ASSIGNMENT, CADET arch returns with WING, SECTION, and SQUAD labels (same format as the walkthrough assignment screen).

Quick Checklist After You Burn

  1. Read the failure line — note which dragon and which mistake triggered it (eye contact, neutral stance, etc.).
  2. Screenshot the cooldown if you are tracking wait times; compare valley text with the Rotunda timer.
  3. Wait for Brave Threshing — do not assume an immediate refresh inside /play will bypass the timer Tabby filmed.
  4. Retry with a different approach inside canon rules, not the same memorized sequence; repeating a route does not repeat the bond per fan trackers.
  5. Expect another roll of the built-in 10% risk on every attempt, per Parade’s summary of Yarros’s comment.

If you have not burned yet and want the whole arc first, start with how the game works, then use how to survive Threshing Day for rules that are actually sourced.
